About the Middle School

The Middle School is an exciting place to be. We have our own special program and facilities that address the needs of the Middle School student. Our faculty recognize the unique needs and characteristics of this age group and have dedicated themselves to designing learning experiences and activities to nurture the student moving from childhood to adolescence. Academic, social, and emotional development are hallmarks of the Middle School program. The Middle School years are certainly among the most important years in the lives of students, years which witness considerable academic, emotional, and physical growth. These same years require that students become more responsible, more conscientious, and more organized. Grade level teams work closely with students to implement age-appropriate experiences. Every child is assigned to an advisory group that provides guidance and opportunities for both academic and personal growth.

The Middle School curriculum encourages students to challenge themselves to be learners and doers. Our programs are integrated across disciplines, helping children make the necessary connections between the disciplines. Our emphasis on academics, athletics, technology integration, and fine arts gives students opportunities to explore many possibilities for developing excellence. Throughout Middle School, we provide a step-by-step transition from the "team driven" Middle School to the departmental structure of the Upper School in that it is a vital component of the Middle School transition experience.

Opportunities for leadership abound. Interested students can assume leadership positions in clubs, their classes, and on the Student Council. Because the Middle School students and faculty place such a high premium on trust, student leaders enjoy a degree of policy influence uncommon in middle schools today.

Episcopal Collegiate believes that each student should be equipped intellectually, morally, and spiritually to meet successfully the challenges of higher education and modern life. Emphasis is placed upon a mastery of basic subject matter, yet the curriculum is designed to stimulate thinking and broaden perspective. Students who need additional help with study skills or reinforcement in specific academic areas will find a support system in place for them.

Extracurricular opportunities abound at the Middle School. High-interest electives, after-school clubs, athletic options, and fine arts opportunities allow students to explore their strengths and talents. These activities also give students additional opportunities for emotional and social growth as they move through adolescence.

In keeping with our philosophy of preparing students for their own roles in life, we facilitate student interaction with the world beyond the school through our Community Service program. It is our goal that students will become aware of their responsibilities in their own communities. Our students are involved in visiting nursing centers, sending under-privileged children to camp, collecting clothing and books for the needy, feeding people in homeless shelters, and many other service projects. All advisories and grade levels have activities which give back to the community.

Providing a step-by-step transition from the Middle School to the departmental structure of the Upper School is a vital component of the Middle School experience. Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders spend time with a team of teachers, and the students have service and leadership opportunities in Student Council.

What I enjoy best about being an Episcopal student is the friendly staff. The teachers are interested in each of us, which make us feel special. They encourage us to be the very best that we can be. I like the individual recognition, I receive, which gives me a sense of accomplishment. I can tell that each teacher love their job by their great attitudes. -
