Upper School Academics

Welcome | Academics | Curriculum Preview | College Guidance

The Episcopal Collegiate School is a college preparatory school serving grades 6 through 12. Our belief is that each student should be equipped intellectually, academically, socially, and spiritually to meet the challenges of higher education and modern life. While the Middle School academic program is built around the grade level team concept, the Upper School program is organized by departments, or disciplines, which provide the course work for students to meet graduation and college requirements.

In the Upper School academic program, emphasis is placed upon a mastery of basic subject matter, yet the curriculum is designed to stimulate thinking and to broaden perspective. Students in the Upper School (grades 9 - 12) receive departmentalized and interdisciplinary instruction in six or seven 50-minute periods per day. Academic subjects include English, math, science, social studies, foreign languages, fine arts, religion, health, and physical education. Many other courses are offered as electives so that a student may be introduced to a new discipline or further his/her studies in a preferred discipline.

The school year is composed of two terms of approximately equal length. Term examinations are given in mid-December and in May of each year. Progress reports are issued to parents mid-way in each term or at any time a significant change in performance occurs. Through the Power School software, our parents have constant internet and password-protected access to their student's grades. Each Episcopal Collegiate student has a faculty advisor who works with a group of 6-9 students on an individual and group basis. Advisors assist in scheduling courses, discussing academic difficulties and successes, and handling routine administrative duties. Parents are encouraged to get to know and to communicate as needed with their student's advisor.

Effective time management is crucial for success at Episcopal Collegiate School. The school day provides opportunities to complete some homework before leaving campus; however, students should plan to devote additional time at home, the amount depending upon course demands and the student's individual abilities. The academic departments coordinate testing schedules so that no student has more than two major tests on any day. Each faculty member offers extra-help sessions and individual conferences upon request. Students are encouraged to be organized in their approach to their studies and to take the initiative to seek help and to work out solutions as soon as they perceive a problem.

As I have visited classes, I have been impressed with the quality of teaching and learning that takes place every day. We have great talent and great potential at Episcopal Collegiate School. If you would like to discuss the academic program, or any other aspect of Upper School, please do not hesitate to contact me at 501-372-1194, ext. 462.

As I have progressed through the years, I have discovered that my teachers, are just like any other people. They have morals. They have plans over the weekend. They have a life too, and don't want to be at school anymore than I do. What makes them special is the fact that they are here by choice-to help us learn, grow, and become impeccable human beings. -
