Percussion

Percussion classes at Episcopal Collegiate School expose students to the world of drums and drumming, not only through acquiring the ability to perform on the individual instruments of the percussion family, but through the focused reading and research of drumming and the percussion heritage of different cultures from around the world. Students will increase their proficiency at playing the individual instruments that make up the percussion family including, but not limited to: orchestral percussion (snare drum, timpani, cymbals, accessories), drum set, steel drums, mallet instruments (marimba, xylophone, bells, chimes), and world percussion (African and afro-Cuban).

Students will be involved in a multitude of learning situations including group instruction, percussion ensemble, clinic settings, master class meetings, and individual practice. Each year many percussion students further hone their craft through participation in the Arkansas Youth Symphony and Academy Orchestras. All of these learning environments serve to provide the students with the best chance for processing the information that they are acquiring and improving their performance and understanding.

Each year the percussion classes at Episcopal Collegiate School perform at a number of different venues on and off campus. On-campus performances include chapel service, football games, pep rallies, the annual Fine Arts Showcase and Percussion Ensemble Concert, and at special events such as Grandparents Day, Class Day and Open House. Off-campus performances vary from year to year, but have included performances at Baptist Health, March of Dimes Walk for Babies, Worldfest, Country Club of Little Rock and Hendrix College.
