Upper School Art

The visual arts program is a comprehensive program to support the creativity of the individual artist and their creative interests. Foundations of Art is a semester course designed to introduce the artist to basic art vocabulary, techniques, and art history. Students will be able to utilize past knowledge in the visual arts to build stronger connections to specific media or styles or if it is the first time working in the visual arts this course will help build the individuals aesthetics and help guide them into select additional visual arts course throughout their Upper School career. We host several visual arts courses to develop the individual artist in the direction that best suits their passions. The semester courses provide guidance and experience using different media on multiple surfaces. Students are exposed to art history and are encourage to develop their own "voice" in each assignment. We offer a semester of Drawing and Drawing II, Painting and Painting II, Media Art, Printmaking, Sculpture, and AP Art for the artist that wants to pursue a artist portfolio for college.  We also have an Art Club which supports our wonderful Art Auction and school spirit activities.

Middle School Art

The Middle School art program develops a strong foundation in the visual elements and principles of art. Students enrolled in middle school art courses develop skills in life drawing and become increasingly proficient in painting, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed media. The Middle School art curriculum integrates art history and contemporary art into every project. Middle School art students learn about art movements and cultural traditions as they explore the media and techniques used by the artists and artisans. As students learn about artists and different methods and materials they begin to discover their expressive abilities and strengths. Each Middle School student is treated as an individual and is given the freedom to develop at his or her own pace. Middle School art students are involved in several exhibitions during the year, and have the option of being involved in a very active Art Club.

Lower School Art

The emphasis of the visual arts program is to develop and enhance the skills of each child, while nurturing the special creative talent of each individual student. Creative expression is encouraged while students develop their artistic skills as they explore new techniques related to drawing, painting, comparing, and constructing. Creating an environment where students can express ideas, feelings, and values through their art provides an excellent opportunity for affective growth, and is a high priority of the visual arts at Episcopal.
