Our Story

In 1996, inspired by The Cathedral School's K-6 Episcopal educational model, a group of dedicated parents and community leaders initiated the creation of The Cathedral Middle School. By 1997, this endeavor became a reality as an independent institution. Initially housed at the Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church, the school moved to its permanent location at 1701 Cantrell Road in 2000. Named the Jackson T. Stephens Campus, it honored Jackson T. Stephens for his lifelong dedication to education and pivotal role in establishing the school.

The Middle School opened its doors in 1998, welcoming grades six through nine, with plans to expand to an upper school. Construction of the Upper School commenced shortly after, completing in 2001. Reflecting its Episcopal heritage and expanded mission, the school was renamed Episcopal Collegiate School in 2003.

Episcopal Collegiate School achieved a significant milestone in 2004 when Jackson T. Stephens, along with Warren A. Stephens and Harriet Stephens, endowed the school with $30 million, ensuring its financial stability indefinitely. This transformative gift was complemented by additional contributions from Harriet and Warren Stephens in 2007 and 2013, supporting periods of crucial growth.

In 2006, responding to increasing demand, the Board of Trustees decided to enhance the school further by adding a Lower School Division on the Jackson T. Stephens Campus. This division, spanning Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, opened its doors in 2009, consolidating Episcopal Collegiate School's commitment to comprehensive, quality education on a single campus.

The Run Wild Capital Campaign was initiated in the Fall of 2018 to fund significant enhancements to the athletic facilities. The Smith Family Track and Blass Field athletic complex opened in August 2021 and the Mourot Stadium in August 2023.

On August 17, 2023, a special Founders’ Day Chapel was held to commemorate the official 25th anniversary of the School’s establishment. In concert with Founders’ Day and to advance the School’s mission for future generations, the Harriet and Warren Stephens Family Foundation most generously gifted $25 million to the Episcopal Collegiate School Foundation. Mr. and Mrs. Stephens wanted to honor and thank those “leap-of-faith” families and faculty members who have wholeheartedly devoted their time, energy, and resources to the School.
