Episcopal Collegiate Celebrates Ribbon Cutting for the Smith Family Track and Blass Field
On Friday, Oct. 8, our entire student body, faculty and staff, alumni, friends, and generous donors gathered together in Episcopal’s new athletic complex to celebrate the Smith Family Track and the Blass Field with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception.
Head of School Dr. Jamie Griffin kicked off the event with a warm welcome, sharing the many ways this community has inspired him during the first months of his tenure at Episcopal. He conveyed his pride and gratitude in being a part of this significant milestone in the life of the School: "[As] we come together today to dedicate this amazing track facility, I am, in a word, inspired, and I hope that you are, too. I am so excited for our students and teachers to take full advantage of this space -- excited, of course, for our cross-country and track athletes, for our soccer and lacrosse players, for our cheerleaders whom I've seen out here rehearsing early in the morning, for our health and physical education classes, for the friendships formed and lessons learned by our students utilizing this space during recess, and for the meaningful and reflective conversations that will undoubtedly take place between our members of faculty and staff who choose to take a walk around this track and get some steps in when time permits. On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of Episcopal Collegiate School, I thank our families and supporters for their steadfast commitment and for continuing to bless our School with facilities and classrooms that inspire and reflect the high-level talents and performance of our students, faculty, and staff."
Dr. Griffin's words highlight the significant impact this new facility will have on the lives of every student, athlete, faculty or staff member, and parent. We are so grateful for the support this project received over the last three years, especially from the many families who supported the project financially.
In her remarks, Board of Trustees President Joan Strauss celebrated the impact of the project and emphasized another important milestone in the School's history that developed through this fundraising effort."This project marks the first time that Episcopal parents, students, faculty, and administrators from all three divisions have contributed along with alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and Board members to build a significant part of our campus. That is an important milestone. As a Board, we are extremely grateful to each and every one of you for your generous support of this community-wide effort.”
Chaplain Father Rob Leacock blessed the facility and the athletes that would grace its track and field with a prayer, and then he, Dr. Griffin, Mrs. Strauss, the Smith Family, and Athletic Director Micah Marsh gathered for a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and photo.
The ribbon-cutting was followed by an “inaugural lap” to represent our past, present, and future. Runners were Justin Gooseberry ’15, Elle Hill (12th), Storm Wilson (8th), Nakiya Owens (5th), and Max Stiles (K). Max anchored the lap and was cheered on by the full Wildcat student body and everyone in attendance.
Thank you to all the donors who made this project possible, including our lead donors, the Smith Family, Massey Family Charitable Foundation, and Harriet and Warren Stephens.
