How and what you give depends on what you hope to accomplish with your donation. Episcopal Collegiate Development staff, in partnership with your professional advisor, can help you consider the different advantages of giving.
Cash: Allows individual donors to claim a current tax deduction if they itemize. If taking the standard deduction, donors can give a $1,000 "above the line" gift per tax filer in 2026.
Publicly Traded Securities: Qualifies donors for an immediate charitable deduction of the full fair market value (average high/low on the date of the gift) and an exemption from capital gains tax on the appreciation.
Life Insurance: Gifts can be made immediately or deferred. Donating a policy directly qualifies the donor for deductions on future premium payments.
Traditional IRA: A Qualified Charitable Distribution (allowable at age 70.5 or older) is excluded from taxable income. Keeping taxable income lower may reduce the impact on certain tax credits and deductions, including Social Security and Medicare. Distributions to Episcopal Collegiate School can be completed using forms from the IRA custodian.
Real Estate: Donating commercial or residential real estate entitles the owner to a tax deduction for the property’s full fair appraised market value and avoids capital gains tax. Real estate must be pre-approved prior to donation.
Timber or Crops: Eligible for different types of tax savings.
In-Kind: Donations of tangible items for Episcopal Collegiate School are accepted after pre-approval from the Development Department for charitable deductibility.
Wills or Trusts: Deferred gifts that support the school and can help mitigate estate tax issues if the estate is above that level.
